What if the key to unlocking powerful antioxidants lies not in rare plants, but in a simple, recyclable solvent? This study reveals how a green chemistry approach can turn a desert plant into a nutraceutical powerhouse.
In the quest for sustainable health solutions, scientists are turning to an unlikely hero: deep eutectic solvents (DESs). These green solvents, often derived from natural compounds, are proving to be game-changers in extracting bioactive molecules. A new study focused on Fagonia cretica, a plant known for its medicinal properties, and set out to optimize the extraction of its flavonoids—potent antioxidants that protect cells from damage.
The researchers tested six different DESs, and a betaine–acetic acid combination emerged as the star performer. Its low viscosity (4.98 mPa·s) allowed for efficient extraction. By fine-tuning conditions—a 1:4 molar ratio, 25% water, and a solid-to-liquid ratio of 1:60 g/mL at 50°C for 30 minutes—they achieved maximum flavonoid yield while preserving bioactivity. But the real surprise came when they compared the antioxidant activity: DES-extracted flavonoids outperformed those obtained with traditional ethanol, showing superior scavenging of DPPH and hydroxyl radicals.
What's more, the DESs proved their sustainability credentials. After extraction, they could be recovered using ultracapacitor porous activated carbon, with an impressive 89.78% recovery rate. Even better, the recycled DES maintained 92% extraction efficiency after six cycles. This means the process is not only effective but also cost-efficient and environmentally friendly.
This research marks a significant step toward a circular bioeconomy, where waste is minimized and resources are reused.
