The effect of ultrasound on improving the extraction of tannins from the Stryphnodendron adstringens bark

What if the key to unlocking a medicinal plant's full potential is simply vibrating it? A new study shows that ultrasound can dramatically improve the extraction of tannins from the Brazilian 'Barbatimão' bark.

Deep in the Brazilian pharmacopeia, the bark of Stryphnodendron adstringens, known as Barbatimão, has long been a trusted remedy. Its phenolic compounds are prized in traditional medicine and commercial products alike. But extracting those compounds efficiently has been a challenge. Enter ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE)—a technique that uses sound waves to disrupt plant cells and release their chemical treasures.

Researchers tested a hydroethanolic solution (50 wt%) as the solvent, varying the ultrasound amplitude (0–40%), solvent-to-feed mass ratio (5–25), and extraction time (2–12 minutes). The goal was to maximize the recovery of phenolic compounds, including tannins, while also assessing the extract's antioxidant capacity and safety.

The study fills a critical gap: previous work on Barbatimão and UAE did not explore all possible variables, and little was known about how ultrasound affects the extract's composition and biological properties. By systematically varying these parameters, the team aimed to optimize the process and understand the underlying phenomena.

Beyond just extraction efficiency, the team measured ferric-reducing antioxidant capacity (FRAP), antioxidant cell activity, and cytotoxicity. These tests help determine whether the ultrasound-enhanced extracts are not only more abundant in tannins but also more potent and safe for potential therapeutic use. The results promise to refine green extraction methods for this valuable medicinal plant.
