The influence of natural deep eutectic solvents on bioactive natural products: studying interactions between a hydrogel model and Schisandra chinensis metabolites

What if a simple, eco-friendly solvent could unlock the hidden power of medicinal plants? Natural Deep Eutectic Solvents (NADES) are doing just that, and a new study shows how they can carry lipophilic molecules into a hydrogel—potentially revolutionizing drug delivery.

Natural Deep Eutectic Solvents, or NADES, are simple mixtures of hydrophilic organic molecules and water, yet they possess surprising powers: they can dissolve lipophilic (fat-loving) molecules that usually resist water. In this study, researchers combined NADES with a model hydrogel made of chitosan and alginate—a hydrophilic polymer network. They found that NADES, such as mannose-dimethylurea-water (2:5:5 mole ratio), could form a matrix that dissolves lipophilic compounds like curcumin, load them into the hydrogel, and then spontaneously leave the system, leaving the cargo behind.

But here's the twist: NADES occur naturally in plants, and a crude plant extract is actually a mixture of NADES and bioactive metabolites. So the team hypothesized that a natural NADES-rich extract could load its own bioactive molecules into a hydrogel. To test this, they used Schisandra chinensis fruit extract—a rich source of lipophilic botanical molecules. The results showed that the NADES matrix of S. chinensis successfully loaded at least three of its metabolites into the hydrogel, proving the concept.

This work opens the door to greener, more efficient ways to deliver natural bioactive compounds, potentially enhancing their bioavailability. It's a beautiful example of nature's chemistry meeting modern biomedical engineering.
