Can a humble mango leaf and a mulberry leaf team up to shield your skin from the sun? This study blends them into a spray gel—and the numbers are promising.

Sunscreen is about to get a natural upgrade. Researchers combined extracts from gedong mango leaves and mulberry leaves, using a green chemistry method called NADES-MAE to pull out the active compounds. The extracts were then mixed into a spray gel formula, with different ratios of mango to mulberry leaf extract: 3:0.5, 3:3, and 3:6. Each formula was tested for its physical properties—spreadability, pH, viscosity—and all passed with flying colors. But the real star was the SPF value. The higher the mulberry leaf content, the better the sun protection: SPF climbed from 2.08 to 2.78 to 3.53. That means the 3:6 ratio (GM-CarSG 3) offered the strongest shield, making it the top contender for a natural, spray-on sunscreen. While these numbers are modest, they hint at a future where your sunscreen might come from leaves, not just lab chemicals.
