Traditional decoction and puae aqueous extracts of pomegranate peels as potential low-cost anti-tyrosinase ingredients

What if the secret to brighter skin and fresher food was hiding in your fruit bowl? Pomegranate peels, a byproduct of juice production, just proved they pack a powerful anti-browning punch.

Every year, tons of pomegranate peels are tossed aside after juicing. But these humble scraps are far from waste—they're a treasure trove of bioactive compounds. In a new study, scientists tested two simple water-based methods to unlock their potential: a traditional decoction and a pulsed ultrasound-assisted extraction (PUAE). Both took just ten minutes, and both delivered impressive results.

The extracts were rich in phenolics, with total phenolic content ranging from 148 to 237 mg gallic acid equivalent per gram of dried peels. They also showed strong radical-scavenging ability, up to 472 mg ascorbic acid equivalent per gram. But the real star was ellagitannins, which linked directly to tyrosinase inhibition—the enzyme responsible for browning and pigmentation. PUAE extracts had higher ellagitannins and lower EC50 values, meaning better enzyme inhibition, while decoctions offered slightly more phenolics and free ellagic acid.

Using principal component analysis, the researchers found a clear correlation: more ellagitannins meant stronger tyrosinase inhibition. This makes both extracts promising as low-cost ingredients for cosmetics or anti-browning treatments.
