Ultrasound-Assisted Extraction of an Extract with Dermatological and Nosocomial Activity from Agave nuusaviorum, a Mexican Endemic Plant

What if a plant used in traditional Mexican medicine could be the next weapon against drug-resistant superbugs? A new study reveals that an ultrasound-assisted extract from Agave nuusaviorum leaves fights 14 different pathogens, including those causing skin and hospital infections.

The rise of antimicrobial resistance is a global health crisis, and scientists are turning to nature for answers. This time, they've focused on Agave nuusaviorum, an endemic Mexican plant whose leaves have long been used to treat nail fungus and inflammation. Using ultrasound-assisted extraction—a green technology that reduces toxic solvents and energy use—researchers obtained a hydroethanolic extract from the leaves and tested it against 14 pathogens of dermatological and nosocomial relevance.

The results are striking: the extract inhibited the growth of every single microorganism tested. Inhibition zones ranged from 9 to 16 mm against Staphylococcus aureus, Candida albicans, Candida parapsilosis, and eleven isolates of Trichophyton. The minimum inhibitory concentration varied from 0.5 mg/mL for S. aureus, 0.25–1 mg/mL for yeasts, and 0.4–1.25 mg/mL for molds.

Phytochemical screening revealed the presence of terpenes, phenolic acids, tannins, carbohydrates, and steroids—compounds likely responsible for the antimicrobial activity. While the exact mechanisms remain to be explored, this study highlights the broad-spectrum potential of A. nuusaviorum as a source of new antimicrobial agents, offering a glimmer of hope in the fight against resistant infections.
