Ultrasound-assisted extraction of chlorophylls and phycocyanin from Spirulina platensis
What if the key to unlocking Spirulina's superpowers lies in sound waves? A new study shows that ultrasonic irradiation can dramatically boost the extraction of its precious pigments.
Spirulina platensis is a tiny blue-green alga with a giant reputation. It's packed with nutrients and health-promoting compounds, making it a superstar in food, cosmetics, and medicine. But getting those bioactive treasures out of the cell is no easy feat. Traditional methods are slow and inefficient. Enter ultrasound: a green, powerful tool that shakes things up at the molecular level.
In this study, researchers compared different Spirulina samples—dry, lyophilized, and frozen—to see which held the most chlorophyll. The dry sample, SP 1, won with a whopping 9080 µg/g dry weight of total chlorophyll. But the real star was phycocyanin, a blue pigment with antioxidant powers. They tested classical extraction against ultrasound-assisted extraction at two frequencies, using plain distilled water.
The results were striking. After just 3 hours of sonication at 35 kHz, they achieved the highest phycocyanin yield (2.5 mg/g dry weight) and a purity of 0.8. That's a significant leap in efficiency. This method doesn't just work better—it's also greener, cutting down on processing time and costs. For industries relying on Spirulina, this could be a game-changer.
