What if the leftover shells of a popular Amazonian cosmetic oil seed could become a treasure trove of natural antioxidants? A new study shows they just might.

Deep in the Amazon, the murumuru palm produces oily seeds that fuel the cosmetics industry. But after the oil is extracted, mountains of biomass are left behind—often discarded. Now, scientists have found a way to turn this waste into a source of health-promoting compounds, using nothing more than sound waves and ethanol.

By fine-tuning an ultrasound-assisted extraction with a statistical design, the team discovered that a 60% ethanol solution, a 2.5% solid-to-liquid ratio, and just 26 minutes of sonication could pull out 9.92 mg of phenolic compounds per gram of biomass—very close to what their model predicted. The extract also contained flavonoids and tannins, and LC-MS analysis revealed a complex mix of bioactive molecules.

But the real excitement came from the biological tests. The extract scavenged free radicals in two different antioxidant assays, and it selectively inhibited the growth of Staphylococcus aureus—a common pathogen—while leaving other bacteria unharmed. That's a promising sign for natural food preservatives.

This isn't just about a single palm. It's about a new way to think about agricultural waste: as a sustainable resource that could boost the bioeconomy of the Amazon, one ultrasonic pulse at a time.
