The humble sloe berry, often overlooked, is stepping into the spotlight. Researchers have discovered that its residues—the seeds and skins discarded during liqueur production—are packed with bioactive potential. This isn't just waste; it's an untapped resource for a circular economy.

Using green extraction methods, the team identified a phenolic profile dominated by quercetin, 2,3-dihydroxybenzoic acid, and ferulic acid. They also confirmed the presence of essential minerals like copper, zinc, and calcium. But the real excitement lies in what these compounds can do.

In laboratory tests, extracts from sloe skin showed remarkable neuroprotective activity. They inhibited the aggregation of beta-amyloid, a hallmark of Alzheimer's pathology, and protected SH-SY5Y cells from oxidative stress. The most promising effects came from very low concentrations—just 1 and 10 μg·g−1.

By correlating the chemical composition with biological activity using chemometric tools, the study reveals a clear link: these phenolic compounds are the drivers of neuroprotection.
