For decades, Gelidium sesquipedale has been harvested for one thing: agar. The rest of the alga was largely ignored, a byproduct with untapped potential. Now, scientists have turned their attention to the leftovers, and the results are impressive. Using ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) and eco-friendly solvents, they've unlocked a broad spectrum of minor compounds in record time—15 to 30 minutes, compared to 8 hours with conventional methods.

The extracts are packed with phenolics, flavonoids, mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs), and phycobiliproteins—all valuable for their antioxidant and anti-enzymatic activities. The numbers speak for themselves: 189.3 mg of phenolics, 310.7 mg of flavonoids, 1271 mg of MAAs, and 72.4 mg of phycobiliproteins per 100 g of dry weight. These compounds have potential applications in medical and cosmetic products, from anti-aging creams to photoprotective agents.
